sassy cooking
since i am a very incompetent cook, our kitchen is ill-equipped for preparing elaborate dishes. that’s why i love these two recipes from the pinoycook; they require ingredients so common that even a scantily-stocked kitchen such as mine can dish it out. where i lack, some sort of substitute can be made, approximating the original recipe, without sacrificing the taste.
for the fried chicken with basil, i used margarine, instead of butter because jan has milk allergy. and because i was too lazy to go buy fresh basil, i made do with a liberal helping of ground dried basil. it didn’t turn out looking the way it does on that photo, what with the tomatoes and onions making it somehow look like dried up sarciado, but it had the ketchupy-taste that makes fried chicken so yummy. it’s an unusual way of frying chicken, but it was a hit with jan and hubby!
i also loved sassy’s orange pork loin steaks primarily because they were so easy to do, even for someone as helpless in the kitchen as me. but because i didn’t have herbed salt (er, i don’t even know what that is), i used plain salt (with fluoride and folic acid, if it matters), plus italian seasoning and again, margarine for frying. instead of steak sauce, i used some zigeuner sauce leftover from a grill party last year (kidding!). the orange juice makes this dish a whole lot different to the ho-hum steaks i usually prepare. tastes a bit like piniñahan but well… different. main selling point is: it looks sophisticated, tastes sophisticated, but is suuuuuper easy to do!
i’m counting the days til i can make a repeat performance. meanwhile, on with the hunt for idiot-proof recipes….

ruth!! i recently tried 3 of sassy’s recipes, and we loved them all, including seb ha! the sweet and sour chicken, chicken tomatoes and pineapple stew and the pinoy spaghetti (for kids). when i saw herbed salt in the sweet and sour chicken recipe, i immediately ignored it because i also didn’t know what that means, but when I went to the grocery to buy the ingredients, I saw Bad Reichenhaller’s Kräuter salz (with folic acid din) without even looking for it.
and you know what? three of our meals for the coming week (yeah, I almost always plan ahead at least 5 of our meals for the week) are from sassy’s recipes. and i plan to try more in the coming weeks!

i think you’re underestimating yourself too much. my belief is if you have a sense for what taste good and what taste bad, you can cook. it just takes a little practice. and a little faith. and prayer perhaps.
hindi naman ako magaling magluto, but i can proudly say i know how to cook. not gourmet, pero nakakain naman. i guess side effect na pagiging chemist. so, go grab a cookbook and fire away!

renan, i’m trying to recall the name of that canteen you reach from grove along a circuitous way, pero easily accessible from demarses. shucks, hirap ng tumatanda!
but, right, cooking cannot be so far from making chemical concoctions, eh?
jhing! pwede bang mag-subscribe dyan sa weekely menu mo? para hindi na ako mag-iisip, hehehe…. correction pala: instead of herbed salt, i used salt + italian seasoning (i assumed, kung ano mang herb yung kailanga, andun na rin yon, hehe)

hey ruth, i have to get started on that beef brisket recipe myself hehehe kahit na it takes more than 4 hours to prepare! mukang idiot proof din. hope i get in the mood to get out of the house.
about cars naman, with me on the way again, we just MIGHT buy a 2ndhand car (3rdhand na when it gets to us) but that’s only IF S allows us this “luxury”. and it looks like i’ll be the only one who’ll be able to drive kasi i have my license pa with me… depende sa funds.
lastly, i really love the way your site looks. except that on netscape, i can’t see the first P of your paruparong bukid title.
