holy cow!
april journeys prompted me to this piece of news. it says that according to the National Anti-Poverty Commission, of the 12 million children most at risk, 2.2 million are underweight and 2.86 million are shorter than average.
and PGMA proposes to increase cow milk production as an answer.
cow’s milk? why would milk answer the poverty and malnutrition problem in the philippines?
breastfeeding is best for babies up to 2 years of age. give the cow’s udder some peace. use yours. afterall, it’s your child, not the cow’s. oh, we’re talking about school children, you say? before you rebutt that a woman can’t beastfeed for so long, take note that in some parts of africa, children are breastfed even up to age 6.
i wonder if they’ve taken into consideration that a lot of pinoys show lactose intolerance. probably an evolutionary trait.
and what’s wrong with goat’s and carabao’s milk, too?
the irony is, we currently live where milk and milk products abound. but my son has milk allergy; he can’t drink milk nor eat anything with milk protein in it. so what’s our alternative? rice milk, fortified with calcium-rich algae. ingredients? rice, seawater and the algae. the last time i looked, the philippines is an archipelago, where rice is one of the, if not the major agricultural crop. if my son can drink that, why can’t they?

dahil sila ay mahilig magBAKAsakali?
seriously, i don’t see the connection unless they want the 12,000 cows to ‘give’ more jobs to the farmers, er—*scratches head* by becoming milkers?
as you said, rice is the philippines’ major agricultural crop…wouldn’t it be better if they concentrate on putting more nutritional ingredients in the rice fields to harvest healthier grains/rice? than getting more cows to EAT rice or worse, be fed artificial stuff with the belief that the milk would be more nutritious, but in the end, results to bad side effects on people? ay ewan. these are just my scattered nuninuninus…

hi ruth — do you know that rice is now being imported by the Phils from other asian countries kasi di kaya ng domestic production i-meet ang local demand? baka di na yan ang ating major agricultural crop! ayayay!
breastfeeding up to 6 y/o? hmmm…..di ko ata kaya yun.

xtine, yes, i know. even as far as california pa nga eh. i guess my point was just, milk is not the solution. nakakatawang isipin na while in the west, people are starting to reject milk and animal products, sa pinas naman baliktad. and oo naman, no. ako rin di ko kakayanin yung 6 yrs na breastfeeding, hehe…
glo, am not sure kung saan galing yung rice that they use, but i think the production is here. am is not suitable kasi wala namang masyadong calcium ang rice, di ba? it’s the algae that covers that need.
justice, nawindang ako sa comment mo, hija. pag-mumuni-munihan ko muna, ha?;)

When I went home the first time with JP, I was still breastfeeding him. My God, more than half of the people who knew that fact discouraged me! Some stupid friend even made an equally stupid remark with “mahirap lang ang nag bre breastfeed”; another one said that I shouldn’t do it dahil mag sa sag ang breast ko. Mga bobo! Ano ba namang mga priorities na yan!
anyway, going back to your blog… bakit nga ba di ginagamit yung resources na meron tayo`?

Might want to try rice milk too. Any particular brand you know in German supermarket ruth?

breastfed my eldest for 10 months, my second son for 18 months and maia at 16 months is still going at it, like she jumps at me the minute i walk in the door coming home from the office. i’ve always had the idea that breastfeeding is natural, and any president (especially one who is also a mother) who thinks that it’s a cow’s job to feed my kids should have another think coming.

Hello Ruth! And I totally agree that breastfeeding is the best. My daughter is breastfeeding too up to this time and she will do it till her baby is 10 months old. The funny thing is her friends in RP commented that she is so poor for she can’t even buy a formula milk. I am so sad of this concept some Filipinas have and also Asians. I realized that those who are breastfeeding are mostly from Western Countries.

jing, if you have lactose INTOLERANCE, that’s different from milk allergy. you still can eat yoghurt, for example and lactose-free milk. pero if you like soyamilk, good for you. it’s naturally rich in oestrogen-like hormones! ok para sa mga masusungit na may menopausal tendencies, hehe…

You have such short, easy to read, informative posts,ruth..pero natawa ako don sa reply mo kay jing, lol! I should start drinking lots of soya milk na kaya, ouch!

It’s really appalling how breastfeeding in the Philippines is equated to being poor. Kaya kahit hindi ma-afford o ‘di naman kailangan, formula na lang. Tsk, there goes the kinabukasan ng bayan…

once, i met a mother in my son’s baseball team who was breastfeeding her 5-year-old! i was shocked but i guess i shouldn’t judge. one of my biggest regrets is not drinking more milk when i was younger. if you don’t drink it from infancy, it definitely is an acquired taste. i think most of the lactose-intolerant filipino adults are just not used to the taste.
