strawberry fields forever
two weekends ago, we went on a spontaneous strawberry picking expedition in lich. strawberries in germany are ripe for plucking from the last week of may til about the start of july. prior to that period, there are strawberries available in the market starting as early as march, but most come from spain, but to me, are inferior in flavor compared to the german variety.
most of jan’s pickings landed in his mouth, instead. but in just about half and hour, we were able to fill our basket with around 5 kg of strawberries, and paid half of the market price for them. half the price, but double the fun!
so the past week, my oven tops were filled with bubbling pots of strawberry jams: with vanilla, with rhubarb, and with red wine. i’ve still got about a kg of ‘em, and will get some deep frozen currants to make other variations.
this morning, however, my croissant was filled with plum marmalade. if i have to eat another strawberry jam spread, i think i’ll get sick. anybody want some self-made jams? just send a self-addressed stamped envelope (or box!) and i’d be happy to mail ‘em. but send back the jars, ok? i’ll need them for next season’s harvest!

Ruth, next time, freeze them. Then you can make strawberry smoothie with the frozen ones. Simple lang. Put about 5 frozen strwaberries and a glass of milk into the blender.
‘that way, you can incorporate fruits and milk in Jan’s diet with no fuzz..good for the cheeks and bones.. (*wink*)

ruthie, mahal yata kung papadala, talo sa bigat agad
I agree with Ting, freeze them for smoothie or make lolly Ijs, di ba

wow, how julia child-ish! (eeks, i don’t mean childish). galing naman. we buy cartons and cartons of strawberries here, they just end up getting moldy because we can’t eat them fast enough. never thought of making jam. can you share with us your recipe? thanks!

cool! i went strawberry picking with some pinoy acquaintances a couple of weeks back, too! and yes, i did get sick of eating strawberries after nth days! i think my flatmates got a bit sick of them, too. there were just too much of them. hahaha…kakaaddict kasi mamitas e. lalo na when you keep on wanting to pick the plumpest, reddest, juiciest ones!
hmm, could you send me a recipe on how to make jams? it would be a good way to preserve the berries and eat them as my palate can handle them. thanks!
