jan on sick leave
the little man has been sick since last week. hubby had to take the day off friday as i had a class to go to. we figured that since i had more people depending on my arrival than he did, it made more sense for him to take the day off rather than me cancelling my class. what started out as what seemed to be like the regular flu developed into mild pneumonia so we decided that jan take the rest of this week off kindergarten as well. and like last week, hubby will take the day off and sit with him. which sort of works out, but made me think of how it will be like if take on the challenge of a full-time job. what happens when you’ve got no relatives nor sitter you can leave a sick child with? assuming you can assuage your guilt of leaving a sick child at all.

Same problem we have. My family is in England, my wifes family is over 2 hours away. I work full time (shift) and my wife works part time. Somehow we have always managed to juggle it when our kiddie has been sick. But if my wife worked full time we would have problems when our child is ill.
Under German law you are allowed a certain ammount (not sure how many) days off work to look after your child. I have done this a couple of times.
Hope Jangets well soon.

If and when you decide to get a full-time job, you are authorized sick leave for your child. 10 days (per year) will be paid by your insurance, the rest will be paid by your employer. Most companies do not require sick slip unless you’re going to be out for 3 days or more, so pwede mo na ring i-claim na ikaw ang may-sakit to avoid paperwork hassle (halata bang ganun ang gawain ko?).
I hope the little man is doing OK now! Hey, and if you need anything, you know, like somebody to run errands for you dahil hindi ka makalabas ng bahay, I’m here…isang tawag ka lang.

glo, if it gets really tight, then i might as well!
haddock and rhada: actually, even with this part-time stint, i can cancel a class under such circumstances. makes me feel rotten to do that, but well…
anyway, jan’s antibiotic is doing its job. thanks for the offer of help, rhada. might take you up on it, next time!

At least, here in germany, employers understand that family come FIRST.

i think sick leaves are mandatoryfor employers all over the world, husticia.

yeah it is. i was just reminded of a situation in manila wherein the person was interrogated like h*ll just because she was filing a leave of 3 days. pahirapan pa before she got the go signal. but here, most career moms i know just call-in sick and, if needed, would file longer sick leaves without question. na ja, it’s probably more of the question of the employee knowing their rights huh?

i think it depends on the job. for some, even here in germany, it’s not that easy to secure a leave.

Ruth: it is easy, believe me. I have worked for a German (albeit only for 7 months), American and a Japanese company here in Germany. Admin is always strict to follow German employment laws. As long as you have a sick leave form from the doctor, you do not even have to ask for permission. All you have to do is inform them that you will not be there. And when you have kids, you also have priority over the others who do not have kids to take vacation whenever school is off.
You shouldn’t worry about it. Believe me, this is the best country to live if you are concerned about your rights.

my bebe is sick too after a week in daycare.:-( hayy, so sad when kids are sick. hope jan gets well soon.
i know how you feel about taking days off. in either way, i feel guilty especially when there are so many things to do at the office. but then, my foremost priority is the welfare of my kid. so to hell with work and career. family comes first. anyway, many companies now are more ‘lenient’ when it comes to sick leaves.

kids are always the priority, ruthie and it has happened to us when bea’s sick that simon and i took turns taking days off work. hassle pero what can we do????
Even with Bea’s school activities (school trip to the zoo, sports day, etc) where it would be desirable for one parent to be there (a week day), simon and i take turns taking the day off to be with her para naman lagi syang may moral support naks!

AnP, i was on a different wavelength. it’s not as much as securing permission, but skipping the work. in experimental research, often one cannot simply pick up where one left off after missing a day or two. and it’s not easy to find someone to take over or hold the fort for you either… so major hassle sya. buti na lang, these days, hubby can still work around his sked a bit more flexibly…
mrs14 and xtine: howell, part of the package nga siguro. having been a SAHM for the last 3 yrs, though, i probably still have to convince myself it’s ok not to be there for my kid 100% of the time…. 99.9% na lang!

it’s just about the same here. we all handle our own projects so one cannot just pass it on to someone else. Thing is, even if you have a child and work, you have (at some point) choose between the two. and yes, motherhood always comes first. so…
