getting too personal
for the longest time, i’ve hesitated putting my full name anywhere on the web. in fact, i think you won’t find it in this blog. nor did i ever mention exactly where i live. of course, i can’t prevent it coming up in readers’ comments, although i’ve tried to edit where i can. but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out those things, if you know where to click. call me paranoid, but it kind of leaves me feeling vulnerable. afterall, people have been able to pull tricks and scams, even without being armed with info that inadvertently gets divulged in this blog. how much more potential damage can be done, if someone were to purposefully use info in this blog for devious, evil agenda?
jadevine points out:
we know the warnings parents should give their children about online behavior, such as not giving out personal information and photos to people they don’t know. What makes blogging so different?
and it doesn’t stop at you, in your own blog. i could, for example, have used jadevine’s real name, since i know her off-blog, anyway, and as some bloggers often point out, you can write anything in your own blog, right? but i recognize her preference to remain anonymous to the larger blogging public, even if it’s not explicitly indicated. do you think we put our children in danger by putting their photos and other bits of info about them online? afterall, we never know just where our photos end up. karen and marketman, for example are currently battling it out with the philippine inquirer about photos that have been stolen from their blogs (while it has been common for bloggers to nick photos from other traditional publications, how often would you encounter a national newspaper stealing from bloggers?). maybe jan should remain incognito?
how much personal information do you give out in your blogs? and when you post about other people, how much info do you divulge?

I personally dont worry about it. My real name and where I live is in my blog. So are photo’s of myself, my wife and my child.
If someone wants to do me harm and is serious about it they would find that info via other means anyways……..and if someone did do harm to my family……..I would track them down…….and that would be another story.

My first name and the city I live in are on my blog. I used to blog under my full name and talk (and still do, in fact) about topics that were not received well as far as work went. It’s still not exactly hard to work out, but it’s not actually part of the URL anymore….
Similarly, I removed some photographs and material when I ported it over. As Mr. Haddock points out, and although he is not my son, if anyone did anything to that small boy, they would be er “tracked down”.

well, if we’re worried about full identity on the net, by trying to (at least) avoid putting our lastname…ask me HOW A gets to my blog?

I try to use initials pero minsan nakakalusot ang hindi eh. Need to be consistent.
posting about other people… problem with blogs eh, cryptic messages can be taken wrongly by others. remember that previous brouhaha na akala ng isang tao sya when in fact the post had nothing to do with her? medyo mahirap.

as much as possible i don’t want to divulge basic facts..names, addresses, birthdays, etc. and except for immediate family, no one in my ‘real world’ knows about my blog.
is there such thing as public anonymity?

thess, i wish i could retract some info, too, but well… too late
haddock and neil: i hope you know how to track people down, because i don’t know how far i can go beyond an IP address. if someone does start playing dirty, i’ll first have to track you two down for help!
husticia, well, as i’ve said, if one knows where to click, and piece things together, even that info is on the web
glo, sana, sana.
AnP, used to use initials in the beginning, too, but…ewan ko ba….
rhada: at saan napunta yung N, aber?
misis14: on one hand, i’ve always said that the blog will never capture the identity of a whole person, even if one tries exactly to do that. on the other hand, often, we reveal more than we are aware of… public anonymity? partial siguro… anonymous to a certain group….

I still have my food blog new domain ….people do ask what I do for a living hmmmm…..
at least you need a GPS to track me down.
Hubby do not wish to be mentioned at all…
sis and bro in law are ok since their names appear at certain links at their job.
