nikolaus
am not sure exactly who nikolaus is. am getting confused with all the characters of the german christmas parables–nikolaus, weihnachtsmann, christkind, knecht ruprecht— and who’s supposed to do what, when.
i just know that jan has been animated since last evening, reminding us every 2 minutes during dinner that we have to put our winter boots out in front of the door, and explaining the mechanics of the game. “wenn du artig bist, dann bekommst du bestimmt was vom nikolaus!”
he woke up this morning at a few minutes after 6, and his first words were: “papi, i think we have to check our boots out now.” ugh, it’s still dark! but it was all worth it, seeing him wide-eyed with wonder as he inspected the goodies he got from, er… nikolaus.
“der nikolaus ist aber echt lieb!”

I must have been really well behaved this year (or Nikolaus wasn’t looking!) as I got a few goodies in my boots

same here. the house was awake around 645 for nikolaus and the little ones were overjoyed with chocolates and little presents.

Ruthie, don’t tell me that “Nikolaus” has to put goodies in the stockings every night? Wow, this is one looong Christmas. I wish I were Jan!

misis14: actually, officially, it started on the first advent sunday two weeks ago. masakit sa bulsa ang pasko dito, haha!
jet, both his parents are dreamers, so i guess there’s a good chance of that
yupki, er, no. at least, he has an advent calendar that’s ok to admit yata that it was from us, hehe… but yes, children here have advent calendars, apart from what they get on nikolaus day, and for each day during the whole month of december, they get to open one gift. small stuff lang, usually a candy, a crayon or a small toy. builds up the excitement for the 24th, at the same time, slowly boring a hole in the parents’ pocket, haha!

[...] for jan, easter is like a mini christmastime, just that instead of the nikolaus, it’s the easter bunny bringing the goodies. sometimes i feel a bit worried perpetrating these fantasies. when it eventually sinks in that there really is no santa claus, and that bunnies couldn’t care less about colored eggs, it’s gonna be one major letdown.
