looking for budget hotel to go with budget airfare
about eight years ago, colleague (now hubby) and i made a bet both of us were about 0.5% intent on winning: to meet in venice in a year’s time. he was probably miffed when i said i know next to nothing about germany, and i don’t have an ounce of interest in seeing the country. (was probably a blow, but hey, until he made the first visit, he thought people in the philippines wear leis around their necks and walk around in grass skirts!) so when he asked me to name a european country that at least sparks some interest, i told him that i’ve heard a lot about the gondolas in venice. do i want to see it for myself? not really. or maybe, but it doesn’t make it to my list of top-ten-things-before-i-die, y’know.
so he dared me to meet him there in a year’s time. take note that we were not even “together” at the time. to him, it was a dare to get an asian rooted firmly in her country to go and travel to a far away land. travelling being the no.1 hobby of most germans, it must have been difficult for him to grasp how someone could have so little interest in travelling abroad, much less to europe. for me, it was not so much as lacking interest as dismissing the idea as being as probable as flying to the moon.
well, setting my feet on european soil turned out easier and sooner that i imagined, but i still haven’t seen the gondolas of venice.
so, a few weeks ago, in the frenzy of finding last-minute christmas gifts, hubby clicked that “book now” button and got us seats from ryan air to venezia. quite cheap, really. except now, i’ll have to find a hotel that matches our budget. which, after days of scouring the web, doesn’t seem to be easy. hotel rates in venice are outrageous! and with a hefty €60-70 per hour tag price on gondola rides, i might even have to pass up on this quintessence of romantic venice!
hm, i don’t know. seeing all the $$$ this supposedly-small excursion is costing, going on a trip to venice doesn’t seem all that romantic now. maybe i should have asked for some fine jewelry instead of a ryanair ticket.

Check mo yung rates ng bed & breakfast…baka mas makamura. Sa gondola ride naman, pwede ba yung sariling sikap na lang? Sweet din naman yung sabay kayo ng labidabs mo sa pagsagwan di ba? Baka may discount yun….j/k
Venice is on our wishlist of places to go someday….medyo naiinis lang ako kasi kailangan pa ng visa. Daming hassle.
Enjoy!!!

rhada, sino ang kailangan ng visa? don’t you have one valid for schengen states??? been trying b&b’s, too, but hubby flatly refuses to have one where he has to share the bathroom. arte!
husticia, still looking…got to find something soon, kasi we’re going during the peak season, yikes!
glo, if i remember right, you were also in on this bet, weren’t you? now we’ll have to go without you, sorry… di bale, will send you pics, hopefully with a gondolero to boot!
yasmin, ano pa nga ba? pikit mata na nga lang…
analyse, you’re right, cheaper places are available outside san marco, but if you add what you have to pay for vaporettos, hindi na rin nagkakalayo

sa train station sa venezia-sta. lucia (where you also take the waterbus), meron d’un “last minute” booth. they can get you a hotel in one minute, wag lang kayo padadala sa mga “independent” tour agents na pakalat-kalat sa terminal, medyo kahina-hinala sila. yong sa “last minute” they can get you a hotel for as low as 40 Euros.I was there last month, I got a 3-star hotel for 45 Euros. And then be sure to get a detailed direction on how to get to the hotel, medyo maraming pasikot-sikot sa venice at naglakad ako ng 3 oras dahil sa pagmamarunong ko.
venice is very beautiful but it’s a very lonely city. di ako babalik d’un alone, dapat may kasama na ako na someone special next time.

ruthie,
wala akong schengen visa….nandito ako dahil sa SOFA (status of forces agreement) ek ek. AT dahil Pinoy ang aking passport, kailangan ko ng visa sa karamihan ng European countries. *bow*
may isa pa akong tip: kapag ayaw kong maki-share ng CR, nagbabaon ako ng arinola….two birds in one shot yun…may CR na, may sumbrero pa kapag mainit ang sikat ng araw. haha

Wow Venice! Have a nice trip there. I also dream of Venice. My readings of Anne Rice especially The Servant of the Bones, made me dream of this city.
Have a nice day!

ruth, now that you mentioned it. yeah i think i vaguely remember the bet! hayyy…uwian niyo na lang ako ng gondolerong guwapo. he he he..
inggit ako…pero buti na rin mauna na kayo dun…para pag nagawi na ako diyan, alam mo na kung saan yung mura na puwede nating puntahan.
enjoy…hanap muna ako ng partner, para di ako inggit sa lovers of venice.
alam mo ba kung naging girl si raine, venice ipapangalan ko dapat! he he he…

limp, it’s tempting to book last-minute, but as we’re going during peak season, it’s quite risky. actually, hotel rates at the moment are reasonable, around €50/double room, pwede pang tumawad. but during peak (may-aug), naku, mahal!!! btw, been reading your european backpacking tour. pictures naman!
rhada, i thought kasi you had the german residence visa prior to acquiring your SOFA…… re: arinola, eh paano ang ligo, isang buhos lang? hehe…
luchie, thanks! it will be some time pa naman. will let you know if the real thing lives up to the literature!
sha, why naman never within the city?
toni, we’ll see…:)
