Venice: The Grand Canalabout eight years ago, colleague (now hubby) and i made a bet both of us were about 0.5% intent on winning: to meet in venice in a year’s time. he was probably miffed when i said i know next to nothing about germany, and i don’t have an ounce of interest in seeing the country. (was probably a blow, but hey, until he made the first visit, he thought people in the philippines wear leis around their necks and walk around in grass skirts!) so when he asked me to name a european country that at least sparks some interest, i told him that i’ve heard a lot about the gondolas in venice. do i want to see it for myself? not really. or maybe, but it doesn’t make it to my list of top-ten-things-before-i-die, y’know.

so he dared me to meet him there in a year’s time. take note that we were not even “together” at the time. to him, it was a dare to get an asian rooted firmly in her country to go and travel to a far away land. travelling being the no.1 hobby of most germans, it must have been difficult for him to grasp how someone could have so little interest in travelling abroad, much less to europe. for me, it was not so much as lacking interest as dismissing the idea as being as probable as flying to the moon.

well, setting my feet on european soil turned out easier and sooner that i imagined, but i still haven’t seen the gondolas of venice.

so, a few weeks ago, in the frenzy of finding last-minute christmas gifts, hubby clicked that “book now” button and got us seats from ryan air to venezia. quite cheap, really. except now, i’ll have to find a hotel that matches our budget. which, after days of scouring the web, doesn’t seem to be easy. hotel rates in venice are outrageous! and with a hefty €60-70 per hour tag price on gondola rides, i might even have to pass up on this quintessence of romantic venice!

hm, i don’t know. seeing all the $$$ this supposedly-small excursion is costing, going on a trip to venice doesn’t seem all that romantic now. maybe i should have asked for some fine jewelry instead of a ryanair ticket.
