la isla bonita
mallorca is the biggest among the balearic islands lying in the mediterranean sea. this spanish island receives nearly 9 million of visitors a year, a good percentage of whom are german, english, and dutch.
we’ve always thought we’re not the mallorca-holiday type of people: party til the wee hours of the morning, guzzling cocktails by the buckets (literally, the cocktails are served in buckets with straws for several people to share), and when not dancing to the ballerman beats, sunning on a beachtowel not an arm’s reach away from the next sunbather. that’s what mallorca meant to us… until last week.
thanks to holidaycheck, we found a hotel that has been rated high by families with small children. still, we were wary and were prepared to expect the worst. well, not really worst, but we braced ourselves and told ourselves to simply give it a try and expect nothing extraordinary.
we were positively surprised. the hotel we ended up in exceeded our expectations by a mile! it was quiet, clean, and the personnel have been extremely friendly, particularly to children. and as any parent would know, if the children are treated well, we parents are happy campers. the breakfast and dinner buffet offered superb food. and unlike the horrors we’ve heard, not once did we have to wait to be seated. the hotel club also had its own cove, which may indeed be quite tight and crowded during peak season, but as we travelled in late september, there was enough space for everyone. towards the end, the hotel was only probably half full, about 80% of whom had toddlers and kindergartners with them. what more can a parent wish for?

[...] when we were still in germany, there were two websites i usually check out whenever the travel bug bites. it was with fly where i chanced upon a 350-euro lufthansa flight from frankfurt to manila in december last year (normal airfare would be about 3x that)) and we booked out mallorca holiday via bucherlastminute. [...] bang asked whether i planned to get a travel agent for our bohol trip. i did consider the idea, yes, in the off-chance that they might offer cheaper local rates, but frankly, i can’t remember the last time i’ve been to a travel office. i used to book my flights from frankfurt to manila by phone from a travel agent who offered balikbayan fares that allowed up to 35 kg luggage allowance, but even that has been at least 2 years ago. our more recent travels, however, are all made online, be it flights, hotels, or holiday packages. my last two fra-mnl flights, our mallorca holiday package, our weekend trips to playmobil park and rhön, air tickets to malta, egypt, rome, portugal, singapore, and even train tickets here and there. heck, give me a well-padded credit line and i can even book a luxury royal caribbean cruise if i so wanted!
