perambulator
perambulator (short: pram) is apparently the british english term for a stroller/buggy/pushchair. i’ve met only one person who ever used that word, though.
well, whatever you want to call it, i need one. i’ve disposed of all of jan’s “baby vehicles” (yes he had more than 1) when we relocated so i’m now scouting for a new one for baby#2. as lazy as i am, i’m letting my fingers do the clickin’ to see what’s in the market out there. and boy, is the range of offerings huge!
i need something light, compact, and easy to fold/unfold as i use the public transport a lot, and the majority of public buses here aren’t really buggy-friendly. most buses don’t have ramps that allow you to push baby-and-buggy into the bus. in other words, you’d have to remove baby from the buggy, fold buggy up, carry baby and buggy into the bus, pay your fare, and find a seat and settle down before the driver steps on the gas. which might just be manageable, if you don’t have a diaper bag and a million other stuff to carry as well, plus a sugar-powered preschooler tagging along.
therefore, because i just have two hands, i need something as light and easy as possible. i love, love, love the sleek looks of quinny and smartbuggy, but they aren’t suitable for newborns as the backrest cannot be fully reclined. i thought of using a baby sling for the first few months, but considering how oppressive the heat can sometimes be over here, i’m not so sure i can stand wearing the baby for long periods.
i did find good options while surfing the web, based on the descriptions and customer reviews, at least. but like certain items, such as shoes/apparel, furniture, door hardware and fixtures, there are stuff you just need to see ‘live’ before buying. with strollers, i need how to see how easy it is to drive it, how to fold/unfold it, etc. kailangang kapa-kapain, pisil-pisilin, at amuy-amuyin, hehe. so in the next couple of weeks, i’d have to haul my butt to the shops and baby stores and test drive perambulators.
for those moms in the US or locations where amazon delivers, take advantage of Amazon’s Save a Bundle Sale! unfortunately, amazon does not deliver to singapore, aside from books, cds, and dvds.

You can buy the bugaboo…hahaah!
seriously, if the transportation system there is so buggy-unfriendly, carry bebe2 in a sling. I’ve seen moms carrying their 2 year olds expertly in slings. If you’re really set on a stroller that’s lightweight, you can use mclaren’s once she/he can sit up. They can be folded with one hand.

i’ve actually looked at the bugaboo bee, but i don’t want to spend that much naman (otherwise i’d get a phil & ted’s na lang). also, while it’s cute and compact, it doesn’t really look comfortable for the baby. i’ve really thought about the sling, but the problem is when you’re outdoors for longer periods (eating out, pasyal), you don’t get a reprieve; besides, i’m afraid it’s too warm here for hours of baby-wearing.
i’m actually looking at a maclaren techno xt, along with other peg perego ones. thanks for the tip, tin!

got a maclaren techno xt from baby kingdom. thumbs up ako. it’s so light weight and sturdy. we even hang grocery bags while A’s sitting on it, so far it’s still intact.
about baby sling, it also depends how heavy the baby is. amelie’s born big and heavy and it was really back-breaking to bring her around wearing that.

uy, thanks, tin. hm, i’ve really got to go to kaki bukit na and check it out. one deciding factor pa for me is that it has to be easy to collapse and vice-versa kasi nga i use the bus when i pick jan up from kindergarten. we’ll see…

[...] all the effort i invested reviewing strollers, looking for that perfect one that would meet what i thought i needed, went for naught: mia decided she would rather be carried. so yes, the stroller has been, to date, more or less another white elephant, and she’s either in the sling or strapped to me with the baby bjorn. i’m bearing her weight ( a little less than 6 kg at 2 months) without much problems so far, and it’s seems like it’s the most convenient to travel with a baby here anyway. but i’ hoping that maybe when she can already sit upright on her own and starts to get more interested in “sightseeing”, she’d find the stroller a better alternative. [...] given what a major p.i.t.a. it is over here to use public transportation with a stroller (some people even have the gall to suggest to just leave babies at home because strollers are considered such a nuisance), i’m left with few options: to exchange my current perambulator for one of those lightweight Maclaren strollers — volo, i think is the lightest at 4 kg– or to get a better baby carrier . given that mia still isn’t that happy with seeing the world from the perspective of gnome, i bought the much talked about (in the babywearing community at least) beco butterfly.
