beauty or brains
the philippines is sending this lady to the miss world pageant.
which elicited reactions from a lot of pinoy bloggers, media, and former philippine beauty titlists:
i disagree with ruffa. proficiency in english does not equate to “having brains”. indeed some of the most intelligent people in the world do not speak english at all.
during the interview, janina displayed an obvious lack of english proficiency. but, so what? that in itself is not an indication of her IQ. however, the fact that she could not even manage one coherent sentence is quite telling, considering that this lady must have had at least 10 years of english classes (assuming she finished high school level at least). nobody should expect perfect grammar, but is it too much to ask for one sentence that makes sense?
on the other hand, connie is right. it’s just a beauty pageant after all, and beauty, she has.

its also an indication of how bad education is in the philippines now. my lola only finished grade 5 but she can speak english like it’s her first language. look at call center agents now, only a handful lang talaga can converse in good english, and the only thing that comes to mind when i’m talking to some of them is “trying hard”.
i agree with connie, we don’t have to speak in english at pageants. pwede naman mag-interpreter like some other contestants. pero at the same time, i agree with you din kasi in a beauty pageant one is expected to be good at everything, including giving poised, smart and coherent answers during the interview portion. and if they wish to answer in english, they have to be really good at it. if not, magtagalog na lang.

tama, sana tinagalog na lang niya. wala namang masama kung sakali. mas nai-express pa niya ang sarili niya.
shame to those who ridicule her though. kasi, hindi naman basta-basta lang ang nasa entablado ka, then you suddenly realize na you’re inferior pala of something. i can just imagine what’s going through janina’s head at that minute.

meeya, may point ka dyan. there was a time na UP was promoting filipinization of courses,in an attempt to foster appreciation of the filipino language pero parang nag-backfire ata yon.
des, i have to admit, napa-nganga ako sa kanya. maybe it was just really a case of nerves pero di ba, when she decided to enter the contest she knew what she would be up to. at ang di ko maintindihan is kung papano sya nanalo despite it all.
haynaku, bakit kasi may q&a pa ang beauty contests. dapat beauty na lang talaga.

nagulat din ako na sya ang nanalo (nanliliit ako habang sumasagot sya)….pero sana nga, gamitin nya yung 7 months para mahasa ang kanyang sarili…if not, pwede naman mag-tagalog…pwede ang interpreter sa mga pageants….
Inis ako jan kay Ruffa, hindi ko sya feel, parang trying hard ang pa-sossy nya. sus.

i missed this brouhaha samantalang asa pinas kami while this was happening. anyway, beauty na sya i am sure she’ll have time to be coached di ba? happy easter!
