missing germsland
less than two years ago, i never thought i would say it but the longer we live outside of germany, the more i realize that it’s really not such a bad place to live in. there are many things i miss, and values that i appreciate more, now that i’m outside-looking-in. the approach to education (both “bildung” and “ausbildung”, the differences of which i just understood recently) and access to fair and sensible health insurance leading the list.
a few months ago, my mother in law asked me whether i could imagine to live in germany again. i replied a resounding yes, although i also admitted that maybe not just yet. i think of germany as home, the same way the philippines is, and when we go back, we’d probably feel like it’s going to be for good. and much as we appreciate all that the vaterland is, we’re not ready for that yet. where to next? i don’t know. we’re staying put for the meantime.

hi ruth, i feel the same way for iowa. i know some people (americans) who lived in germany for a while and they love it. education is good they said. anyway, i was just wondering how do they teach their history esp. their role on WW1 and WW2. i am just curious as i just saw a movie “the boy in a striped pajama”. By the way, iowa is predominantly german descent. at one time i lived in a small town where older people were immigrants from germany that they forgot english once hit by dementia. they even talk german to me.

same here. between living here and there, i’d immediately prefer germany.

loraine, as far as i know, they are very upfront about it. no sugarcoating, no omissions. that’s why they are very vigilant that the same won’t ever happen again. there are also a lot of museums and memorials all over the country about it.
but then, one has also to remember that their history lessons span several centuries, unlike ours that tackles very little about pre-1521. the WWs are but short segments in their history.
