immaterial
trying to declutter when you live with pack-rats is like raking leaves off your lawn before autumn is over. document management system? a friend recommended freedomfiler some time ago, but i’m not convinced it’s really what we need. most of our important documents are organized anyway (alright, semi-organized, but i can still find important docs and am on top of our bill payments); it’s the sheer amount of stuff we have, particularly books and manuscripts, that’s disproportionate to our living space, and drives me up the wall.
i don’t think i’m a clinical or pathological hoarder. in fact, over the years, having had to relocate from asia to europe and back to asia, i’ve lost that feeling of attachment to possessions. when you relocate halfway across the globe, and you are forced to do away with a major chunk of your stuff because it’s impractical to move them with you, you learn to become detached to material possessions. you free yourself from the emotional baggage, the so-called sentimental value you pin on certain items, that hampers your mobility.
but hubby… hm, a different species altogether. but let’s see. one more major relocation and i bet, he’ll be a convert, too.

hay same here. the need to let go was only learned after we left germany na. as time went by, the documents/files (from the same species haha) slowly became paper planes.
